Delicious Eating on a Budget

Simple Ways to Save on Groceries

It's no secret that keeping your grocery bill down right now feels like a challenge—prices seem to be creeping up everywhere we look! But don’t worry: with a few simple strategies, you can still stretch your budget and eat well. (If you’re curious about how food costs are shifting, you can always check out the latest updates on the Consumer Price Index.)

Here are my top favorite ways to save money at the grocery store:

  • Focus on whole, minimally processed foods: This is really one of the best foundations for healthy eating. Real foods are more satisfying and naturally packed with the vitamins and minerals your body needs, meaning you won’t have to waste money on expensive supplements to fill nutritional gaps. (Of course, if you ever suspect a specific deficiency, it’s always best to get checked by your healthcare provider!)

  • Cut down on food waste: Try to cook your fresh produce and meats shortly after buying them, and freeze extra portions for quick future meals. Getting a little creative with leftovers instead of letting them hide in the back of the fridge is one of the easiest ways to save money.

  • Shop your pantry first: Before heading out, do a quick inventory of your fridge and cabinets to see what meals you can pull together with what you already have. Planning your meals just a few days or a week in advance helps ensure you only buy what you actually need.

  • Look for budget-friendly alternatives: Swapping in plant-based proteins like beans for meat even a couple of times a week makes a huge difference. Choosing local seasonal produce over imported options saves money too, as does opting for affordable seafood choices like canned tuna or sardines.

  • Keep recipes simple: As Ina Garten famously put it, "I don’t need a cookbook with 250 recipes. I need a cookbook with 75 recipes that I can actually cook with ingredients that I can buy at my local grocery store." Look for quick, uncomplicated recipes online, or take inspiration from classic rustic cooking—dishes traditionally made by resourceful home cooks using everyday staple ingredients.

P.S.: Reducing waste is something I’m truly passionate about in all areas of life. If you're interested in learning more, check out Trash-Talk by Skylansea for helpful ideas on home recycling and waste reduction solutions!
